I recieved an email today that had been passed around. I was somewhat annoyed seeing how it is inaccurate and judgemental. This is what the email said:

"These people criticize Americans for being materialistic!
You thought your gas tax dollars were wasted . . .
THINK ABOUT THIS PLACE NEXT TIME YOU FILL UP YOUR GAS TANK. THIS IS A HOUSE, NOT A HOTEL. DON'T MISS THE CAR AT THE END."

This was my reply to all cc: on the email:

Nice... Actually, it is a hotel.

It is called the Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi. I was there in 2005 filming IDEX and was invited to a dinner put on by the Prince. Its a hotel through and through.

Sure the Sheikh's family probably owns it and they stay in it whenever they want, but nevertheless, its a hotel. A very, very, very nice hotel. It includes 302 Grand rooms, 40 Khaleej & Khaleej Deluxe suites, 4 Royal Khaleej suites, 16 three-bedroom Palace suites divisible into a total of 48 one-bedroom individual suites. If you'd like to book a room feel free to visit the website and have at it (http://www.emiratespalace.com/en/home/index.htm). If you're lucky you might be able to get a room for under $600 per night sometime before 2010. They also have a few little shops where you can pick up a little bling for your significant other.

I appreciate the intent of the email, but don't blame the guys who sell us something we depend on. Besides, the amount of oil we get from UAE is rather small compared to that of Mexico, Venezuela, Canada and Saudi Arabia.

So if you still want to "Stop The Highway Robbery being Committed Against Our Fair Land And World", then stop needing things that require oil to run or make like your car, paved roads, perfume, plastics, synthetic fibres, synthetic rubbers, detergents and so on. Besides, China needs more oil anyway. ;-)

And if you care, here are a few shots of my producer, Shane, and I snoopin around the the hotel. ;-)

best wishes and have a great week!

p.s. you should probably note that the UAE doesn't think you're materialistic, only the person that started this email does--who's probably jealous they couldn't afford the hotel room. ;-)

My apologies for the virus comment someone so kindly left. Maybe it was the same person who started the email.
